  • PROJECT (CREATIVE DIRECTION)

This shoot is one of many done for Doc Swinson’s Whiskey when I was handling their Creative Direction through my role as Primary Staff Creative for JoyCo Digital. I held several production meetings to establish the company’s goals for cohesiveness across marketing strategy and brand story. I then pitched a few shoot ideas and collaborated with their team to produce the following collection of images: quintessentially pacific northwest, featuring real people enjoying their whiskey for a sense of community and iconic bottle shots creatively featured in nature. Several of these images went on to go viral in the whiskey community’s social media spaces. Throughout my year-long work with the company, I continuously experimented with throwing out the rulebook on how to take a “traditional” bottle shot to make Doc Swinson’s stand out while still staying true to their branding.

WRITING EXAMPLES: THESIS EXCERPTS

  • I consider any moment that is experienced in that all-encompassing way that fills our souls with emotion to be one of the most fascinating features of being human. Whether the moment itself makes me feel deep sadness or profound exhilaration, the ability to be able to feel so deeply in the first place is what my pictures celebrate. I realized that I could take the most authentic and heartfelt pieces of the experience of being alive and turn them into tangible things, literally take a picture of a moment exactly how it is experienced it and make it into a thing you can hold and see and scroll through. I can make photos in a way so vibrant and real it almost feels like they’re breathing, fierce and intimate portraits that emotionally connect to the experience of living.

  • The artistry in work that successfully transcends a person’s internal reality and demands that immediate sense of vivid presence hinges on how the pictures are constructed by the photographer. I purposefully got on someone’s shoulders at the show in fig. 13 so the music would feel as if it was floating over everyone else, belonging only to me. That comes through in the picture. I got down even on the ground with the little girl in fig. 14, so that the deeply moving experience she was expressing through her dancing would be the purpose of the photograph. It’s not a picture of a little girl experiencing a moment, it’s a picture of the moment itself, when music goes in through your ears but fills up your entire body, captivating your movements and flowing out of your limbs. It’s the moment when music makes you dance. Getting on her level was necessary to communicate this. If I’d shot the picture from above, the girl would have been the subject. But by centering and framing from the ground, it envelops us and makes it about the moment itself. The emotional intensity of the images happens because they are encoded with a certain kind of believability. The subject matter has nothing to do with the intimacy of the picture, it’s how the medium is used that invites the audience to project their own experiences onto the image. The photographic choices I make seek to embed emotional access points for viewers. The work itself is a subjective reality that feels real because of the way it has been crafted in relation to composition, color, object, and action. The way these elements interact in the images and play off of each other determine why each image feels so vivid and present to the viewer.

    • My responsibilites on this account included inbox management, Influencer Management/Community Manager, scheduling posts + reels, tracking analytics, copy and brand voice development for new announcements or changes to website/product descriptions. I was not directly responsible for content creation or growth strategy. This account grew to 500k+ followers in 2021, but due to scandal and ethical issues, that number has since dropped dramatically. I am no longer associated with this account in any way.
